History

ERPUG is a non-profit organization established in 2012. It was started on the initiative of Roger Möller (employed at Ramboll) and Leif Sjögren (then employed at VTI) as a 50/50 % cooperation activity. An advisory group consisting of European stakeholders was created. It was decided to use the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) in Linköping, Sweden, to host the administration of ERPUG.

Since 2024, ERPUG has been operated through a limited company to provide greater clarity regarding its planning, operations, and accountability.

Objectives and vision

The European Road Profile Users’ Group (ERPUG) provides an international forum for the exchange of knowledge, experience, and best practices related to the collection, analysis, and use of road condition data.
ERPUG brings together road owners and authorities, data providers, equipment manufacturers, researchers, consultants, and other stakeholders with an interest in road condition assessment and management.
The scope covers a broad range of road condition measurements, including road surface profiles and parameters such as unevenness, rutting, pavement texture, and other surface characteristics. In recent years, the scope has also expanded to include structural condition assessments, including road deflection measurements.
